Actually there are 2 diff housings used on remote boxes. The early one, casting no. 22A429 does not have the slot. The second  type which was fitted to later 3 syn and all 4 syn boxes was 22A1478. It has the slot and the parts book clearly shows the rubber piece that fits in there. It is part number 22A1373.

Hope this helps.

My housing does not have the extra slot in question but it does have the opening on the top surface where the shift linkage moves.  I had a part fall into mine and jam the shift linkage in 3rd gear... about a mile from home.  Since that evening I made a sheet metal cover which I attached over the opening.  A spare gearbox I have uses duct tape to cover the openings.

Mine is the same and I was planning on using some wet suit neoprene to seal the gap. I found it was a pain in the arse to hold it inplace and ended up using silicone instead. I ended up using silicone on the bottom also as the housing was weld repaired and the half moon seal wouldn't fit without grinding off all the weld overlay.

It looks like crap but at least it will keep the gravel out of the housing.   dan

The open section in front of the slot was covered with tape right from the factory. Highly recommended. As mentioned, a great trap for the odd, dropped washer or nut. You could do the same for the slot; although, not as critical.

Mine is the same, nothing missing. Fill it with silicone and cover with Duct Tape. I swear that every nut and washer I drop when working on the carbs falls in that opening. Terry

If you're not on the edge............ you're taking up to much space.

I know there is a half moon shaped gasket that fits in the bottom half of the two pieces:

Item 65 here...

Maybe I am missing item 66?

Is there supposed to be a plug or something in this spot between the remote housing and the diff case?

Just wondering of dirt and other crap is going to get in there?
