Gary, you may want to do a search on how to flush your radiator, there were several on here not long ago. Basically you have to get the old nasty stuff out and make sure it's clean before you put the new antifreeze in. You can use a flush product and that will help. Then when you go back, use at least a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water. Some people use the water-wetter product that seems to help keep it a little more cool. If you go to all this trouble, I would also change your thermostat for peace of mind. Go with the stock temp though. What fan do you have? Do you have an electric cooling fan as well? If so, does it work?

My Mini's are un-officially sponsored by Coor's brewing company.

Thanks for the quick reply, Dan

Yes, I always shift to 3rd when I go up hill, since it would give the mini much more power compare with " D ".

I was going up the mountain, and I do check the tempture all time, and it was running a little hotter than normal (a little over mid way), and all the suddent, it just stopped and I couldn't stop the car anymore. What I did was, I let it rest on the side of road with the bonnet up, after 30 minutes, she was fine and running again.

I really wanna do a radiator flush (have never done one), I just opened and check the water inside when the car was cool, water inside was turned yellow brownish color, looked like there is all rusty. The antifreeze that you are refering to, could I get it at any auto part store , or do I need a particular one for mini ? I will do some search for learning how to do a radiator flush.

Thank you again for your help Dan,

Gary

Gary,

I'm in Phoenix, so we're over 100 all summer. I do run a little hot, but I have the secondary electric fan. It wasn't working when I got it, but $16 and a new thermostatic switch it's now working great. Still, I run between normal and red in the afternoons. Once again, the previous owner had a problem with overheating and had the radiator flushed and filled. The best thing you can do is do a radiator flush. A lot of the Minis have never been flushed and some have never been run with antifreeze. If you flush the system and add new water with antifreeze it will help a ton. Do a thread search on here and you'll see some great info from others who have had problems. I would definitely be careful if your car just stopped. That can't be good.

As far as oil, I'm using straight 10W-40. I fugure its hot in the summer and the thicker oil is better. Do you shift into 3rd to go up hills?

DESmon,

Thanks for your reply again, I will go ahead and order the oil filter from our host, and the copper drain plug as well. Any other things you suggest or recommend that I should frequently replace for the auto trans mini?

Actually, I have some more questions for you.

What type of engine oil you use for your auto mini?

I have been using NAPA 10 w 30 motor oil the whole time. Should I be using that?

Also, my car just stopped at road today while I was driving up to the mountain! I believe my mini was running too hot + the heat in NY today. I let it cool down for 45 mins, and she was fine and back to normal.

Is yours like running hot sometime? Any ways could avoid or anything I could do to it ?

Thanks again,

 Gary

Gary,

Sometimes I shift through the gears, it's definitely faster that way. Typically, I just leave it in drive. That is the point of the automatic to be easy right?

Definitely change both the oil and the filter. The assumption with changing every 1000 miles is you'll wind up changing the oil about the same frequency as someone driving a typical car. Most people aren't using their Minis as daily drivers. But since the transmission is integrated, you want to keep as much metal particulates out of the oil as possible.

I was lucky on mine, the lady I bought it from pretty much replaced all the suspension.  She had already done the subframe mounts, tie rods, bushings etc. The suspension on the Mini is better than my 1994 Explorer. Then, fortunately for me her daughter, who actually owned the car, needed to start commuting and decided she was too scared to drive it on the freeways. So far, knock on wood, everything I've had to do is minor. Hang in there and just keep fixing what needs to be done.

Hello, tvanderh

Thanks for the reply.

So we should change both the oil + the oil filter every 1000 miles? That would be the best for auto trans, right?

I do change my oil often, however, I didn't know about the oil filter.....I better get it changed ASAP.

As the copper sealing washer, are you refering to this ? http://www.minimania.com/web/Item/AED172/AddedFrom/Search2%2DDRAIN%20PLUG/InvDetail.cfm ?? and may I know how often we have to replace it ?

So, I should replace the oil filter, and the copper sealing washer for the drain plug, any other things that I should watch out for and replace?

Thank you

Gary

Hey DESmon,

That pdf would do. Thanks again!

Yes, I just have had my mini for 5 months...eventhough is an automatic, but I still love it!

By the way, you drive yours with "DRIVE" all the time or go from 1 -2 -3 , then to drive?

1,000 miles is the best for the auto mini. I always keep a filter around just in case so I usually buy 2 at a time. What a mess to change the oil. Even worse if you have A/C. The new filter comes with 2 new seals. Mine uses the thinner of the 2 seals, be sure to change the seal. Oh, and always order and replace the copper sealing washer for the drain plug. Any other questions, I'm glad to help. Todd

Gary,

The pdf is of an older manual, but it basically the same information. I actually have two physical books. The one on the link you posted is the newest Haynes and has a lot more info. If you're keeping the car I would definitely get the blue Haynes.

Every 1-2 K miles would be good on the automatic transmission. Although, I'm really new to all this as well. I've only had mine a couple of months. Hope I can get to be more of a contributor on the boards.

Hello DESmon,

thank you very very much for your reply and the helpful information.

Yes, we do have the exact same car and even the color is the same.

I will send you some pictures of mine, and would love to see yours as well.

I will go ahead to order the oil filter from our host, however, do you know how often we have to replace them? like oil change , every 1000 miles as well?

I have just printed out the service manual, but is it the same as this http://cgi.ebay.com/Haynes-0646-Classic-Mini-Service-Repair-Manual-69-01_W0QQitemZ260261183637QQihZ016QQcategoryZ72272QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD2VQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em122 ?

Thank you very much again,

Gary

Gary,

I have the exaxt car. 1993 Mini Sprite Automatic. As far as I know all the automatics use the canister oil filter. No chance of getting one at your local auto store. Maybe if you could find a local British shop they might have one. Autos are pretty rare. Here's the MiniMania filter link. I got my Haynes Manual on e-bay. I did come accross a pdf online of a Haynes Manaul for the Mini as well. You can download it here. Good Luck.

Hello all,

I am looking for a oil filter that would fit on my mini.

It is a 1978/1993 Rover mini "sprite" edition, 1275 cc with automatic trans.

Can anyone let me know what brand or any particular one I need to replace on my mini? and would I be able to find it at any auto part store?

I am also looking for a sevice/repair manual. I need to replace the rear main seal for the oil leak problem, and also some wheel bearings, ball joint, and the CV boot. My friend, who only works on VW buses, is willing to lend me a hand if I could find a service manual for him. Anyone could let me know which service manual I need at reasonable price? any recommendation? ? or does anyone have one for sale by any chance?

I would like to have the two problems of my mini fixed in a garage, however it would cost around 500$ for both jobs at the local garage, which I could not really afford it.

In fact, I could also offer some money if anyone around NY ( I live in Upstate NY,  New Paltz, or Great Neck,Long Island) would like to take the job. (I need my car fixed ASAP, because I gotta to let it go next month before moving to the city)

I appreicate for all the replies, advices, and recommendation

Thank you

Gary
