The heat itself is not the problem but it could be compounding a problem, the coil or fuel vaporization as suggested. I drove my Mini from Vancouver to Flagstaff and back. On the return trip through Nevada it was 110 but it ran perfectly OK but the engine temp was at 212 the whole way even with the heater on. Changing to a lower temperature thermostat will not make any difference. No matter what, a Mini rad is totally inadequate when it is 110.

The worst part is driving in traffic at 100+ temps.  If you're spending any time at all sitting still you can overheat quick.

Ah yes.

He was telling me he has driven the car 160 miles at a time at 85 degrees with no problem. So I guess 107 did it for the car

Insulate fuel lines in the engine compartment from header heat. Same for the carb float.

That is what I was thinking, that the car just over heated.

It probably just overheated, an all too common ocurrance during the summer here in Phoenix.  I had the same thing happen to my Bronco when I first moved here.  That was before I learned to get where I was going as quick as possible.

Have him check his themostat, it could be rated higher than is necessary for Phoenix, unless he parks his mini in an air conditioned garage the engine is just under operating temperature just sitting still.

So you recommend changing the coil pack. Any recommendations?

sounds like an overheated coil, might be something to check

Life is like installing windscreens, it takes a lot of elbow grease and some personal lubricant.

I just received a call from a friend who is an owner of a 68 Mini with a 1380 minimania motor. He doesn't post here, so I told him about it (he isn't very computer savy, I don't think he owns a computer), but he is having problems with his car, so  I will paraphrase, and see if we can remotely help him.

"Ryan, I have been daily driving my car and have had no problems in 8000 miles. Motor/tranny is great. Lately in Phoenix temps have been very high. While I am driving the car say 45-50mph, in 4th gear, car will automatically lose power and turn off. While rolling, I put in the clutch, and popped it, and restarted for a while drove it 5 more miles, and it died again. I parked on side of road (heat was reading lot higher than normal, and outside temp was about 107), and waited 10 minutes. After that car started up fine, and drove it home 15 miles, when this happened again. This time, car just wouldn't start at all, and letting the clutch out when rolling also didn't start. Waited 15 minutes, started right up, and drove it home. 2 days later checked it, and seemed low on coolant, a bit."

 1) Did he do damage to the car driving it?

2) He hasn't driven it since, but it starts right up.

3) Was it just the crazy heat?

Any help we can provide for this mini owner would be great.
