Bills 7 port did work very well indeed and was a good alternative to a knackered old 8 port before they came available again. However the amount of work involved in the conversion made the finished price similar to that of a new 8 port once they were available again. Bill has now retired back to the IOM and now takes no part in any form of Mini racing or tuning. He does however still service the last ever 7 port he produced shortly before his retirement. A true gent and genuine tuning expert in a world where everyone with a set of spanners calls themselves such. M.

That was the idea. A single port of that size wouldn't work.
Judging by the number of replicas provided by other suppliers it may not have been a really beneficial mod.
Bill did produce a number of front running Miglia cars in his day so a lot of his stuff did work.
Cheers, Ian.

You can't see it those pics, but I believe there's a divider down the middle of each intake port.

The pics Greypride posted - looks like the two intake runners are smooshed into one as it enters the cylinder head. I still count only 5 holes...granted, two are larger than normal. ---------------------------------------------- My Higher Authority is the German Purity Law of 1516 .

I can't see the pics posted above... however, Bill Q's 7 ports were non crossflow unlike the current MSport 7 ports. I have a Manx 5 port that is still going strong after 20 odd years. He did a lot of intersting things back then, including conversion kits to fit BDAs and other Fraud motors onto mini gearboxes...
Bill was a real gentleman.

Years ago Bank's Garage advertised a white Mini Pick-up with a converted 7 port head that was supposed to have been built by MED if I remember right. Nolan had videos of the pick-up running up and down the street as a selling tool. Doug

if the Manx Racing decal on the valve cover in the photos is authentic, then the head conversion was done by Bill Quinne, a Downton graduate who made a number of clever parts including a very light(for its time) flywheel/clutch assembly. I've heard that Bill has retired to his beloved Isle of Man as is no longer in business.

Contact Bill if you like, but if you e-mail him and ask if he can CONVERT A 5 PORT HEAD into an 8 PORT HEAD I wouldn't bank on receiving an answer. The answer to this is that it is totally impossible, or should that be ridiculously inpractical. Bill certainly does NOT do such a conversion. He will however convert you ENGINE to an 8 Port spec, by fitting an 8 port head if you have the wonga. M.

If you want a real answer, rather than the opinions of strangers (myself included) you can contact Bill through his website at http://www.billrichardsracing.com/wp/ Cheers, Kelley "If you can afford the car, you can afford the manual..."

Bill Richards is an old (or should I say "long established" and highly respected engine tuner/racer in the UK.
Back in the 60s some of Bill contemportaries modified 5 ports into non cross flow 7 ports.
However, I suggest the technique for turning a 5 port into an 8 port goes just like those cooking shows on TV. First we remove the old cylinder head then we mix the ingredients - and here's one I prepared earler - we'll just bolt this (8 port) on the engine....
Cheers, Ian

anything is possible if you have the $$. My guess is that turning a stock 5-port into an 8 port would be something I wouldn't want to pay someone to do, especially if were talking iron heads. Not easy, and not money well spent in my opinion. Not that i'm the authority on spending money well or anything! cheers. bc

It blows me away that people still type in all capital letters. Aren't the 5/7/8 port heads all fundamentally different? I don't know if this would be possible. ---------------------------------------------- My Higher Authority is the German Purity Law of 1516 .

ANYONE HEAR OF BILL RICHARDS SPEED SHOP ? APPRENTELY, THEY WILL MODIFY YOUR STOCK 5 PORT HEAD, AND MACHINE IT TO A 8 PORT HEAD. IS THIS POSSIBLE ? RICK
