Give it some thought, Classic Car Insurance isn't as bad as it sounds. Hagerty Insurance is highly recommended and does limit the driving mileage but never checks on the actual miles driven. They know it's a classic car and we're not driving them 30,000 miles a year. 6000miles a year isn't a big deal and there could be a local insurance company that can handle it all for you too. Try contacting Michael in the thread link below and talk to him, you might be happy(r) in the end not having to smog the car. dan "I don't know much, but what I do know I know little of "

No worries. I didn't take offense. I wish the Classic Insurance route would work for me. Worst case, since its titled a '79, if I spend over $300 fix it and it fails again, I can get a waiver for a year. That will buy me some time to get all figured out. On a happier note, I did get my title today! One step closer. Dan

Sorry Dan, didn't meant to sounds so negative. If you have a stock motor then you shouldn't have any problems. Its when the motor has been modified that the emissions problems can be tough to conquer - also if you have to pass the post '74 requirements.
The cat/pipe is here if you need it.

Well, I'm taking it in tomorrow to a shop. I talked at length with the owner of the shop and he seemed very nice. He has a 72 year old mechanic who's been working on British cars his whole life. He assures me we can get it dialed in. As far as the emissions go, I actually pased on the idle test. It was under load I failed. Which shows a rich mixture. Also, its hunting when idling in drive. I'll take it in and see what they say. I would love to do it myself, but I just don't have the tools or know how yet. Ill get there eventually. Thanks everyone, Dan

Reach out to the greater LBC community in Phoenix - all marque clubs and geneal British car clubs. Perhaps they have experience and/or referrals to share regarding the process and helpful shops or hobbyists SE7EN

no worries. I have not used CM so cant comment on them personally, anywhere you go its going to cost some dough. I really think you should reconsider not using the classic car insurance, you will have to deal with this emissions stuff every year and will end up hating your car. Thanks Pommie! That's part of my problem. Being a brand new owner of a Mini, I haven't touched a carb in years. I definitely want to learn to do it all myself. Any words of wisdom…or chance you could give me a hand? I had a referral to Coventry Motors, but I've heard they're pretty pricey. Dan

Find a garage with an exhaust gas analyser and take it there to have the mixture adjusted. In BC the testing costs $25 so only 1 fail represents the cost to have it professionally adjusted.

Thanks for the Link. Not sure what to do. This is going to be my "Daily Driver". Although I only put 4K-6K a year on, I don't think I would qualify for Classic Insurance. I think I may tinker some more and try again. Has anyone else here in AZ gotten a "Referee" on their catalytic converter? They looked under the car and weren't sure if it was a catalytic or not and said I had to go to yet another Department to have it looked at. Dan

Dan, do an advanced search and find the thread about emmissions testing and registration in Arizona. It was on here a week or two ago and it had a lot of good information for you to read through. It may have even been Pommie's thread. The gist of it was to do as Pommie says, classic insurance, some form of documentation form the insurance company and no smog test requirement. Search, read, and do... and never have to smog it again! dan "I don't know much, but what I do know I know little of "

You can't just slap on a cat and get an 'instant pass'. A cat isn't very useful on a car that is spewing unburnt fuel. A cat would be turned to crap VERY quickly if the engine is burning as rich as described in the original post. A cat isn't very useful on a car that doesn't have an o2 sensor after the cat or an ecu to read it and adjust the mixture accordingly. Cat's are not easily available at scrap yards in the US. Most of them get sold to metal recyclers as soon as the car hits the field because one can get a few hundred in scrap Palladium, Titanium, and a few other heavy precious metals. And in the US, if you did find a cat, chances are the connector pipes on either end would be waay too big to connect up to the Mini's 2 inch (at largest) pea shooter exhaust systems. DESmon needs to figure out what is up with his air/fuel mix... Prez, Mini Owners of America, Los Angeles

I kind of figured I would fail the first go around. I think may carb is running rich. The smell of gas is pretty strong and the idle isn't smooth. Haynes says to push on the piston lifting spring to test the fuel mixture, but I can't find the stupid thing. I have a HIF38 carb. Any help would be great. Also, if anyone has any ideas for getting through Arizona Emissions I would be eternally grateful. Dan
