not that price gouging is ever a nice thing to deal with, I did see an article last week about which cars were holding the highest value and the Mini was TOP of the list (in Canada, anyway, so add about 10% for our devalued US currency!).
Toyota and Honda (typically near the top) were soundly beaten by it, in fact:
Mini tops resale value, Mercury, Ford the worst
Chris Vander Doelen, Windsor Star
Published: Tuesday, April 29, 2008
The residual, or resale value, of used cars in Canada has dropped again, reducing the amount of trade-in equity consumers have in their vehicles. The decline has hit nearly all vehicles of recent vintage up to five years old. But especially hard-hit are minivans, which have "fallen out of favour" with consumers, says Dennis DesRosiers, president of DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc. The five brands with the worst residuals were Mercury at 15.8 per cent below market average; Ford 15.3 below; SAAB 13.8 below; Kia at 13.4 per cent below; and Chrysler 12.8 per cent below.
The five best were Mini at 17.8 per cent above the market average; Toyota 13.3 per cent above; Mazda 11.5 per cent above; Acura 11.2 per cent above; and Volkswagen 8.87 per cent above.
The worst-hit segment of the used vehicle market in 2008 are two-year light trucks, DesRosiers says. The average residual of a two-year-old truck has plunged five per cent since last year to 48.8 per cent of the truck's MSRP (Manufacturers' Suggested Retail Price).

When I bought mine in 2005 Long Beach MINI and South Bay MINI (Torrance) both sold them for sticker price with no mark up. I ordered mine from So Bay MINI as it was close to my work. I think there's a couple more around LA that does so also. dan "I don't know much, but what I do know I know little of "

I thought MINI USA did away with the premium markup that was on the cars when they first came out in 2002. At the time the new MINI came out, only east coast and west coast dealerships got to add on the premium markup and it was $1500 for the Cooper and $2500 for the Cooper-S. The dealership in Denver, CO and the dealerships in Texas have always been MSRP - no markup.

Go to www.Northamericanmotoring.com Look at sponsors for dealerships. There were dealers from the very beginning (2002) in Cleveland & NY (Hamptons) who would sell you a new MINI @ MSRP and ship to your door for less than some of those who would rather squeeze every nickel out of customers. Shipping is less than $3,000... EXAMPLE: We have the following Clubmans in stock. All are available for immediate delivery at MSRP. We also have more on the way so if you don't see something you like please contact us. sales@miniofthehamptons.com(888) 871-5599 www.miniofthehamptons.comCOOPER CLUBMANSTK# 52162MSRP $26,350PEPPER WHITEBLACK ROOF AND C PILLARSBLACK LEATHERETTECOLD WEATHER PACKAGEPREMIUM PACKAGEAUTOMATICMULTI-FUNCTION WHEEL16" ALLOY WHEELSCHROME LNE INTERIORCENTER ARMRESTSPORT SEATSPIANO BLACK INTERIOR SURFACEBLUETOOTH AND USB/IPOD ADAPTERCOOPER S CLUBMANSTK# 52156MSRP $32,600ASTRO BLACKSILVER ROOF AND C PILLARSBLACK LEATHERCOLD WEATHER PACKAGEPREMIUM PACKAGESPORT PACKAGE W/ 17" WEB SPOKE WHEELSSILVER BONNET STRIPEAUTOMATICMULTI-FUNCTION WHEELCHROME LNE INTERIORCENTER ARMRESTPIANO BLACK INTERIOR SURFACEBLUETOOTH AND USB/IPOD ADAPTERCOOPER S CLUBMANSTK# 52154MSRP $32,100PEPPER WHITEBLACK ROOF AND C PILLARSBLACK LEATHERCOLD WEATHER PACKAGEPREMIUM PACKAGESPORT PACKAGE W/ 17" WEB SPOKE WHEELSAUTOMATICMULTI-FUNCTION WHEELCHROME LNE INTERIORCENTER ARMRESTPIANO BLACK INTERIOR SURFACEBLUETOOTH AND USB/IPOD ADAPTERCOOPER S CLUBMANSTK# 52108MSRP $30,100LIGHTNING BLUESILVER ROOF ANS C PILLARSBLACK LEATHERETTECOLD WEATHER PACKAGEPREMIUM PACKAGE17" 5 STAR PACE SPOKE WHEELSAUTOMATICMULTI-FUNCTION WHEELCHROME LNE INTERIORCENTER ARMRESTPIANO BLACK INTERIOR SURFACEBLUETOOTH AND USB/IPOD ADAPTERCOOPER S CLUBMANSTK# 52099MSRP $28,850HOT CHOCOLATEBODY COLOR ROOFBLACK LEATHERETTECOLD WEATHER PACKAGEPREMIUM PACKAGE16" WHEELSAUTOMATICMULTI-FUNCTION WHEELCHROME LNE INTERIORCENTER ARMRESTPIANO BLACK INTERIOR SURFACECOOPER S CLUBMANSTK# 52,138MSRP $30,600HOT CHOCOLATE LEATHERSILVER ROOF AND C PILLARSHOT CHOCOLATE LEATHER/HOT CHOCOLATE CLOTHCOLD WEATHER PACKAGEPREMIUM PACKAGE17" 5 STAR PACE WHEELSAUTOMATICMULTI-FUNCTION WHEELCHROME LNE INTERIORCENTER ARMRESTPIANO BLACK INTERIOR SURFACECOLOR LINE CREAM WHITEBLUETOOTH AND USB/IPOD ADAPTER

You also might try buying through a reputable broker if that is possible where you live. I got my '07 S for $500 under MSRP and with the broker's fee it came to MSRP. No haggling, no hassles and I didn't have to fly to another state! Life ain't no use, if you ain't got the boost. The boost you get from Loosener's! I would check New Mexico and Arizona dealerships. I have friends from my Bay Area Mini car club who have flown from California to Arizona to buy a MINI because the price was several thousand $$ less than for the same car in CAL. I don't know the reason for this. The founder of Redwood Empire MINI Enthusiasts (REME) - Peter Zeidrich flew to FLA to buy his new MINI Cooper S a few years ago, and drove it back. He saved enough money to justify the trip. When I start seriously looking into a new Clubman, I know I will be checking dealerships in the South and Southwestern states. "I drive a Mini. What are you compensating for?"

It's all about supply and demand. The new Cooper S's have been in high demand since they came out in 2002. And just about every car I have seen since 2002 has had a few $k tacked onto the MSRP as a result. There are a few dealerships around who sell at MSRP without any tacked on surcharges. But you need to work hard to find em! R Prez, Mini Owners of America, Los Angeles

i went to a dealership today and they told me there is an extra $3000 added on to the msrp price because of high demand for the minis. that premier cost would take the model i want to over $30,000. is this true? i hadnt heard of this. i think this is ridiculous. are they just telling me this cuz they dont want to haggle.
