Well, I did what I should have done in the beginning and bought a lead test kit. I used the battery terminal as a control to make sure the test worked. The paint is lead free.

As stated above, the top coat was enamel. I do remember that in the 1960s you could still buy "red lead" primer in spray cans. However, I doubt any of the primer used by car companies was lead based.
I was merrily sanding away at my seat frames this morning and it occurred to me that these things are pretty old--46 years-- and could have been painted with lead paint. My understanding is that lead paint was used mainly for home interiors, but I thought I should probably check whether I was creating a minor environmental disaster. Anyone know if lead paint was used on car interiors, particularly seat frames?
