>>told me you check the oil from the top of the carb<< well, there IS dashpot oil, top of the carburetor, another thing you'll learn from a manual, or searches here.

That was probably the right one as the engine and trans share oil.

Funny you mention it isn't a honda because this is my first non honda car. I've built a couple honda motors, 1 made 411hp on pump gas so don't doubt me. This is just something new to me. The car is an automatic. Yes it's wierd to me, the old owner i bought the car from told me you check the oil from the top of the carb, that seemed kind of wierd, i didnt' see no oil lines going to the carb so i knew that can't be. The only other dipstick i found was on the transmission. I'll go and give it a second look when i get home. Also is the oil filter located in the front of the motor or back? Just trying to get prepared so i can do an oil change today. thanks! EDIT: For the doubters, here's a picture my girlfriend took of my cousins acting a fool while i was cleaning the carb.

If that's the case, yep, I agree. But I wonder if he just doesn't even have one to begin with since they're so obvious. Another good oil filter choice: NAPA Gold 1374. Mr Bean's uncle was a machinist.

The definition of trouble on the way: Owning a Mini and not knowing where the dipstick is. These ain't Hondas. You can't drive forever with the bonnet (hood) closed. I'm sure there's folks on this board that, if they drove for a couple of days without checking the oil level, it would be at a danger low level.

20W50 for the oil, dipstick on the front of the engine to the right of the distributor. Pete's given you the standard fuel gauge test method. However, in your case (temp gauge also inoperative) the problem is more likely with the voltage stabilizer (mounted on back of the speedometer) or the wiring to it. The stabilizer supplies a regulated 10V to both the fuel and electric temperature gauges. As John said, once you have filled out your profile we'll be in a position to help you more. A manual is a must for any Mini and there are a few to choose from. I like having as many manuals as possible. Doug L.

Dear unknown: Fill in your profile. Most of us were taught not to talk to strangers. Here in the South they've got to know you for a while before they trust you and help you. Are you in the US? 15 or 50? Our host sells manuals, there is a search function that will help you answer a lot of your questions. Didn't think the PH866B had been manufactured for years. But go to Advanced Auto Parts/Autozone/Pep Boys/NAPA/Western Auto and look. K&N sell an oil filter as do others. They may have to look up Austin America, Austin Healey Sprite, MG Midget if they don't list Austin or Morris 1000. http://www.minimania.com/web/threadid/87331/InfoID/1/SiteMessages/35/msgthread.cfm http://www.minimania.com/web/threadid/88892/InfoID/1/SiteMessages/12/msgthread.cfm You could also type in oil filter in the product search window: http://www.minimania.com/web/SUBTYPE/SearchText/Search/oil%20filter/AddedFrom/Search/Search_Inventory.cfm

Remove the wires from the sender for the gas tank, connect them both together, your gauge on the dash should show full, if it does not, then you need a new sender. Even when they do work they are wildly inaccurate, a common mini fault, they can be adjusted when they work but lets get your working first.
Oil, Castrol GTX 20/50
Oil filter is a Ph966b if memory serves, you can buy this or the equivilant at any auto parts store, Strangly is is the filter for a 5.7 liter corvette.
Is your car a 4 speed or auto?
the fact that 2 of your guages don't work make me think that they might just not be hooked up, do you have a standard 3 clock center dash, a side dash (in front of the driver) or a flat panel dash
Peter
No more cars left, Westpaminis is now just a memory, Good luck to all those hard working dealers left out there, We can tell you its not easy. We have fully enjoyed meeting all the fine folks we have in the business.

Dipstick is in the front below the distributor. Your safe using 20W/50 and do you have a cartridge filter or a spin on?

I just bought a this mini but there's a couple problems. The gas tank meter isn't reading anything, it stays on empty but the tank is full. And the coolant temp guage stays cold but the motor gets warm. Also it has the 1000cc engine and i'm having trouble finding the dipstick for the motor, where is located at? One last thing, i'm going to do an oil change, what weight do i use and can i just purchase the oil filter from autozone or cross reference it? 1.Gas tank meter isn't working 2.Coolant temp guage isn't working 3.Where's the dipstick? 4.What oil weight and what oil filter? Please help me with these little problems to have a decent mini. thanks alot!
