The only son of racing legend John Cooper has pledged to keep his father's business going. His vow follows the death, shortly after Christmas, of the man who made the Mini a motoring icon.
Michael will continue to run the John Cooper Garages in East Preston, West Sussex. The pair were closely involved in developing the all-new Mini Cooper, driving prototypes. With his father Charles, John Cooper ran one of the most successful Formula One teams of the Fifties and Sixties. At the height of the team's success, John realised a sporty version of the Mini could be a race winner. Mini-maker BMC agreed, and the Mini Cooper went on sale in 1961. The later Cooper S proved a formidable racing and rally car, taking three Monte Carlo Rally victories as well as the British and European Touring Car Championships.
